Dragonhold US.. 18 Songs by Tania Opland and Mike Freeman.
Review by John Denny for Bob Taverner's Folk Mag Website (reprinted her with permission of John Denny):-
"All the lyrics are taken from Anne McCaffrey's Pern novels. The tunes and melodies are, with one exception (traditional), all by Tania and Mike. As an enthusiast of the books I can say many of the tracks, such as the first two, sound absolutely right ("Robinton's First Whistle Tune" and "Duty Song"). A fine dance could be had to the "Masterharper's Ball". I also like the setting of "Fighting Thread" which appears here as a round (and around and around but nicely). "Dragonlady" and "Firedragon" are both good tunes, particularly the latter.
Although Anne McCaffrey only appears as the writer, Tania, Mike and the backing artists are all recognised singer/ musicians in their own right. The combination of talents on "The Question Song" produces a precisely eerie effect. They have plainly worked with accurate sensitivity to the original books. It will be interesting to see how many of these songs and tunres crop up in sessions and singarounds in the future. Who knows, some future professor may be comparing them with songs in the canon of REYNARDINE and ROBIN HOOD. The whole CD is a neat, complex technical feat."
